A Study on Visualization of Personal Reading Portfolio

The rapid progress in computer graphic technology has opened many new possibilities of applications. The old saying "A picture is worth a thousand words" can now be realized through various information visualization tools. Apart from putting various learning material into so-called learning portfolio, there are newly-developed web services called "online bookshelf" for users to establish their own "reading portfolio" on the web. Initially, users construct the data of reading portfolio in these online bookshelf sites to record personal reading behavior. Gradually, when the data increases, users may have difficulty in tracking their own reading portfolio. In this study, we explore ways of augmenting a current online bookshelf system with visualization function and build a prototype with visualizing tools for a preliminary study. We begin with surveying the functions of several typical online bookshelf systems and current information visualization tools. We conduct the requirement analysis of our prototype by semi-structured interviewing with several typical online bookshelf users to elicit their needs. Then we construct a prototype with several visualization function to present the reading portfolio from different perspectives. Finally, we do the preliminary evaluation of the prototype by asking users to complete several pre-designed tasks. Through questionnaires and interviews, these users give suggestions and positive feedbacks of the system prototype.
