專業英語課程認知之研究 — 以朝陽科技大學專業英語教師與學生為例

摘要


此研究是針對科技大學專業英語教師和學生對專業英語課程認知的調查,旨在瞭解科技大學師生對於學生的英語基本能力、專業英語學習過程中學生所面臨的困難,以及對專業英語課程的期許等三方面的認知;並瞭解老師和學生之間是否對於以上各項的認知持有不同的看法。研究對象為332位科技大學日間部學生以及15位專業英語教師,分別來自人文暨社會學院、資訊學院、理工學院和管理學院。透過問卷以收集教師及學生對專業英語課程的意見及態度,問卷結果以敘述統計及獨立樣本T檢定來分析,並運用開放式問答方式以獲得教師與學生對專業英語教學更深入的看法,研究結果闡述如下,第一,師生兩者均認為學生的英語基本能力不足以應付專業英語課程,他們瞭解專業英語的重要性及困難點,也瞭解學生對專業英語的需求;第二,研究結果證明教師與學生之間對專業英語課程的認知持有不同的看法;第三,研究結果發現專業英語課程存在一些潛在的問題,例如,上課時數不足、教材內容不符合學生需求及專業英語師資缺乏等。最後,根據本研究結論所提出的建議是,專業英語教師與專業學科教師的協同教學可以做為暫時性的替代方案,以解決部份專業英語教學上產生的問題。

This study was designed to investigate teachers’ and students’ perceptions toward English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in Technological and Vocational Higher Educational Institutions (TVHEI). The investigation aims to explore: (1) students’ perceptions toward their English ability, difficulties, and expectations toward ESP; (2) teachers’ perceptions toward students’ competence, difficulties, and teachers’ expectations toward ESP, and (3) the differences in perceptions of ESP between teachers and students. The questionnaires and open-ended questions were administered to explore both the teachers’ and the students’ perception toward ESP. The participants involved in this study were 332 students who had taken ESP courses in the previous semesters, and 15 instructors who were ESP teachers from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Informatics, College of Science and Engineering and College of Management in Chaoyang University of Technology (CYUT). The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and t test. The major findings of the present study were summarized as follows. First, both of the teachers’ and the students perceived that the students’ English language competence inadequate, they were aware of the importance and the difficulties as well as their future needs toward ESP courses. Second, the findings presented that there are divergence between the teachers’ and the students’ perception toward ESP. Third, several potential issues arose concerning with ESP, such as instruction time, content of ESP, and ESP teachers’ qualification. At last, the results of this study suggested that a collaborative teaching could be an alternative of present ESP instruction to partially solve the problems. Finally, pedagogical implications and suggestions for future research were provided at the last part of the study.
