In recent years, netbooks have always come up with new designs, and while everyone wants lighter and smaller, the screen and keyboard are constrained by the size and became user-unfriendly. This study explored the impact of the size of the screen and keyboard of netbooks (7”-11.6”) on operating performance. This study explored the relationships between built-in input devices and screens (7”, 8.9”, 10.1” and 11.6”) of 4 different sizes of netbooks, and five types of operational tasks (multi-directional click, multi point touch, continuous selection, continuous touch and typing). The study was carried out by a test program written in visual basic to simulate the test environment (in terms of operating time and error rate), and also a subjective evaluation. The test result was analyzed through one-way ANOVA and post hoc tests. The result showed that: (1) For operational tasks 1-4 (multi-directional click, multi point touch, continuous selection and continuous touch, there was no significant differences on operating performance between 8.9” and 10.1”/11.6” screens. The operating performance of the 7” screen was not good. (2) For operational task 5 (input by typing), there were significant differences on operating performance between 8.9” and 10.1”/11.6” screens. The operating performance of the 7” screen was again not good. From a subjective evaluation, the result showed that (1) Most of the subjects gave higher value to the 11.6” netbook with a built-in input device. (2) The subjects gave very low value on the built-in input device of the 7” netbook. The relationships between the input device and the operational tasks obtained from the study can provide suggestions to related manufacturers and serve as a design reference for input devices on 3C products in the future.
