The mobile phone has become a basic tool for communication. Many manufactures add variable functions on the cell phone, e.g. taking picture; playing music; internet browser. The components on the side control become more and more, and the layout of the parts might affect the convenience of usage. This study focused on this issue which including two parts of investigation. Firstly the investigation of operation way, 176 subjects were asked to fill a on-line questionnaire which descript the way of operation on varied of add-on cell functions; secondly the evaluation of preferred layout, 28 females and 18 males filled another questionnaire which evaluated two cell phones with different layouts on selected items. The results revealed that ‘operating hand’ and ‘handed factor’ factors did not affect the way of operation. The different handed subjects showed no different preference on those two layouts except for the position of power jack and the handle. This result might support the design of new cell phone and related evaluation.
