Tyrosinase (EC 1.14.18.1) plays an important role on melanogensis in vertebrate. Natural substances with low toxicity to melanocytes and depigmentation activities has attracted the interest for research. In this study, inhibitory effects of various extracts of Rosa taiwanensis fruits on melanogensis were determined. Results showed that 70% ethanolic and methanolic extracts exhibited higher viabilities of B16F0 cells than that of hot water. 70% Ethanolic and hot water extracts significantly reduced the B16F0 melanocyte’s melanin production. And it inhibited tyrosinase activities with IC50 of 71.3 and 82.5 μg/ml, respectively. Meanwhile, they also decreased the protein expression of tyrosinase in B16F0 cells. On the other hand, 70% ethanolic extract significantly increased CCD966SK human fibroblast’s proliferation and collagen formation. These results suggested that 70% ethanolic extract of Rosa taiwanensis fruits with low toxicity to B16F0 melanocytes and depigmentation activity and fibroblast’s proliferation and collagen formation effects might be useful as skin whitening agents.
