Claude Debussy (1862-1918) was one of the most important musicians who influenced the creation of modern French music and a representative figure of Impressionism. As the main composer of the Impressionist School, Debussy continued to create piano music during his career. In addition to fusing the spirit of Symbolism and Impressionism, he also added elements of exotic styles. In Debussy’s works, we can deeply realize his experiments on piano music and his free and innovative techniques. These techniques harmonize the shades of timbre and create a multi-level music world in the sense of hearing. Debussy’s "Preludes" for piano are representative works of his mature period. These works break through the traditional rules of tonality and harmony, using pentatonic scale, diatonic scale, chromatic scale, sustained note, parallel chords and other materials and techniques. The exploration of piano music has reached its peak. This thesis first discusses Debussy’s life background and creative style, and then focuses on the two "Preludes": ‘The Wind Blowing Through the Wilderness’ and ‘What the West Wind Sees’ to make a comprehensive exploration of the background, materials and techniques, combined with the imagination and colors of the impressionist school, to show its musical connotation.
