The Creations of Innovative Products with the Method of “Insightful Design”

When the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) initiated the global campaign of World Design Capital (WDC), they pointed out that as we have more than half the world population now living in cities, where the living environment is having significant impacts on their living quality. Therefore, “Life Quality and Health”, “Ecological Sustainability”, “Urban Regeneration”, and “Smart Living” became the main issues of the campaign for WDC Taipei 2016, which were indeed the imperatives that designers have to face in the near future. To fulfill the mandate of satisfying people’s needs effectively, looking for ways to utilize design methodology for the enhancement of our products have become an important issue for designers in the future. This paper proposed a new design method of “Insightful Design” for creative product design. The four major issues of the campaign for WDC Taipei 2016 are adopted as the theme for 20 creative designs and applied the method of “Insightful Design” to demonstrate its effectiveness. The research results showed that the four steps of “Ideation”, “Insight”, “Bricolage” and “Integrate” in the method of “Insightful Design” could effectively interpret the funnel-shaped process of design thinking that consists of an iterated series of divergent and convergent thinking. Therefore, this methodology is helpful when designers had reaped abundant proposals for solving problems of the user after their “Ideation” efforts. Then it can further enhance the generation of “Insights” that will lead to the discovery of links between needs and solutions and save much time than the systematic comparison between solutions. Moreover, the step of “Bricolage” can facilitate creative matches between needs and solutions semi-intuitively. Finally, the step of “Integration” can spark fusions between needs and solutions to generate creative design outcomes. To summarize the merits of the new method of “Insightful Design”, there are five points as follows: Insight design has the following characteristics: 1. The four steps of “Ideation”, “Insight”, “Bricolage” and “Integration” in the method of “Insightful Design” could enable designers to go through this process more effectively. 2. It can further enhance the generation of “Insights” that will lead to the discovery of links between needs and solutions and save much time than the systematic comparison between solutions. 3. The step of “Bricolage” can facilitate best matches between needs and solutions semi-intuitively. 4. The final step of “Integration” can spark fusions between needs and solutions to generate creative design outcomes. 5. There are five among them won prizes in outstanding design competitions, which demonstrated that this design method is capable of enhancing creativity in product designs.
