This writer, together with another translator, translated and published a book entitled “PEOPLE’S LIBERATION ARMY AFTER NEXT.” In the process, we encountered the question of copyright and discovered that this book had been translated by Taiwan’s National Defense Ministry which published it as a textbook of the Ministry’s “Officers’ Reference Books.” This paper has two purposes: one is to share our experience in obtaining the translation copyright and publication rights in Taiwan with those who may have the same interest in translating and publishing. The other purpose is to discuss what we believe to be mistranslated passages in the Ministry’s version and to discuss the role and responsibility of the translator(s).
