Sciatica refers to some nerve around the lumbar spine being pressed, leading to waist pain and numbness or discomfort in the lower limbs. Regional skin being oversensitive could also be one of the symptoms. The major causes of sciatica include waist injuries from falling, waist fatigue plus overstretching or improper use of strength, and thus result in herniated intervertebral disc (HIVD), the dislocation of the lumbar spine or proliferation of bone warts from aging. The most common afflicted areas are L4-L5 and L5-S1, accounting for ninety percent of this disease statistically. With the comprehensive understanding of waist pain and low back pain, the Chinese medicine has been able to effectively treat this condition and alleviate the symptoms. The sciatica discussed in this paper is purely nerve-pressing type, and neuromas, poliomyelitis, and other similar symptoms caused by internal diseases are not to be discussed here.
