Post-traumatic Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Arrested by Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation

並列摘要

Acute respiratory distress syndrome is a severe and even lethal complication after trauma. Various diseases can lead to ARDS and severe trauma is one of the predisposing factors. We report a case of a 7-year old child with liver lacerations causing internal bleeding and intracranial hemorrhage that consequently developed ARDS. After a trial of the veno-arterial (V-A mode) extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) via the right femoral artery and vein, we successfully saved the child's life. Management of a lung condition is difficult when the patient has multiple injuries. If conventional ventilation does not work in this situation, ECMO may provide a significant and dramatic effect.
