It has been well established that initial stability is the essential to achieve osseointegration for dental implant. Bone quality may be a primary concern about the long term progonosis of implants. Since the aging population goes up in a large scale worldwide lately, the cases of osteoporosis have been greatly increased. In order to evaluate osteoporosis as a risk factor for dental implant, clinicians have to understand the related bony changes. This article describes the classifications, and clinical manifestations of osteoporosis, methods of measuring bone density, discusses the influence of osteoporosis on the jaw bone as well as the healing around dental implants.
