Quality of Life and Severity of Psychiatric Symptoms in Survivors of a Major Earthquake

摘要

Objectives. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quality of life and severity of psychiatric symptoms in post-earthquake survivors receiving home therapy. methods. In this cross sectional study, we evalvated 84 patients who had psychiatric illnesses during an original assessment shortly after an earthquake by the Mini International Neuropsychological Interview (MINI). Trained assistants evaluated survivors in the 4th and 21st month after the earthquake by the Disaster-related Psychological Screening Test (DRPST) and the 36-item Short Form (SF-36). We interviewed a total of 60 patients (19 men, 41 women; age range 61.0±13.8 years). The results were analyzed by Windows SPSS 10.0 software. Results. Symptoms such as major depressive episodes and posttraumatic stress disorder at the initial post-earthquake evaluation improved in a significant number (31.7%) of survivors. The overall DRPST scores decreased after home therapy. Quality of life improved significantly according to the subscale scores of the SF-36, especially for “role limitation due to physical problems” and “role limitation due to mental problems”. Many survivors recovered completely. Conclusions. Mental disorders and quality of life in post-earthquake survivors improved during long term follow-up.
