An Analysis of Poems by Lin You-Ti—the Master of Xuanma Hall of Sihu

There are about twenty or thirty poets active in the Yunlin area when Taiwan was a colony of Japan. These poems recorded the development of Han poetry during that era. This article is part of a project that I am currently working on—“The History of Literature in Yunlin.” In this project, I not only include the biography of Yunlin writers from the Ching dynasty to the Japanese colonial period, but also collect and analyze their poems. Lin You-ti was born in Pu-tzu, but he spent the latter part of his life in Yunlin Sihu. His poems are vivid and natural, similar to those by Yang Wan-li and Lu You. His poems were sometimes criticized as inferior due to the attention he paid solely to his overwhelming emotions aroused by his memories of his hometown instead of writing skills. Occasionally, he would veer off his usual theme and write on different subjects. During his time residing in Yunlin, he wrote some poems portraying this place and the rural lifestyle. An analysis of his poems is important for our understanding of the development of literature in Yunlin area.
