Put the Humanities Back to Medical Curriculum

Rapid advance in science and technologe has compelled increasing specialization. Medicine is no exception. The total corpus of acquired knowledge has grown so great of recent years that a physician can now only compass a much smaller fraction of it. In order to give in to the pressure of knowledge acquisition, the humanities have been gradually squeezed out of the medical curriculum over the past several decades. The end result is the dehuminization of medicine. Medicine is the oldest ”learned” profession and has been studded with achievements of illustrous physicians who are broadly educated and cultured. The humanities and medicine have to go hand in hand. Dehumanization of medicine, therefore, already has had a profound impact on the nature of health care and on individuals and the society as a whole. Medical educators of Taiwan should restore the integrity of the two-year premed program by infusing a massive dose of humanities courses.
