摘要

Margaret Atwood是二十世紀末期最有才智的作家之一，致力於人類生活的解讀工作。Surfacing（浮現）一書乃是其大作之一。作者善用意識流的寫作風格把小說中的人物描繪手法由外在行為及現實情形轉於內在心靈的探索。小說中的人物可以隨心所欲、騁馳時空裡，對事物自由聯想且透過漫長對人物的追憶，昔日的種種一幕幕浮現在腦海裡而編織完整的往事；一種新的體會即頓悟的智慧卻在最後剎那間顯現而賦予人物及讀者永恆的啟示。Surfacing（浮現）一書以頓悟來結束情節的高峰即是一大特色。而另一則是採口語鬆散文體，結構較不嚴謹，包括標點符號、文法的準確性等等，作者較少講究。小說中的人物的談吐，尤其對性愛的用字措辭極為粗獷且露骨又是Surfacing（浮現）一書的另一風格。然而Surfacing（浮現）一書的主要情節佈局，乃藉由主角循表徵之旅的圖案，尋找失蹤父親之隱喻中的三個階段來探索生命的啟示，而得到永恆的神悟。

Surfacing written by Margaret Atwood, who is ”one of the most intelligent and talented writers to set herself the task of deciphering life in the late twentieth century,” according to VOGUE on the front cover of the fiction. There are three styles in the fiction. One style comes out with a kind of special writing skill-stream of consciousness-which depicts any character in a play through converting outer behavior as well real description into the exploration of inner mind. The character in the fiction might associate any suggestion with happenings at any time by which the character seems to recall bygone days and things again and to get a new understanding in fleeting moment finally. In other words, the character obtains ”epiphany” in the final moment and the fiction also comes to an end with epiphany to response to an ending of the climax. The result of epiphany bestows the character and readers on eternal wisdom. Another style in the whole fiction is colloquialism. The writer didn't even care the loose structure of sentences, including punctuation, capitalization, and grammatical accuracy. The other style is the conversations, especially in sexual expressions, between characters in the fiction were unrefined and outspoken. The main plot of the fiction took place in three parts of the protagonist's life through the implication with a symbolic journey in search of her missing father to explore the inspiration of life-pain, revelation, and reawakening.
