Battered women significantly suffer more somatic symptoms than non-battered women. The purpose of this study was to identify the battered women's distinctions of the somatic symptoms in Taiwan. From Jan. 2001 to Dec. 2002 in a general hospital's family medicine department, we retrospectively reviewed the battered women's medical records and sampled 197 cases. In those samples, the average age of battered woman was 36.6±8.1 years. The mean duration of marriage was 12.0±8.5 years. The mean duration of being battered was 8.5±7.7 years. In addition, 187(94.9%) had at least one somatic symptom frequently. The most common three symptoms were sleep problems, musculoskeletal illness, and headache. Compared with the presence of somatic symptoms, the most significant variable was marital rape; while, the less significant variables were the duration of domestic violence, number of children, and combined child abuse. In conclusion, it is clear that battered women suffer much from domestic violence and have many sequelae of somatic symptoms. Therefore, health professionals should be familiar with these somatic symptoms to provide more comprehensive care to battered women.
