Six kinds of commercially available firecrackers were squibbed at a distance of 2,4,and 6 meters, respectively, for measuring noise level by a sound level meter (Rion NA-24). As a result, noise level varying from 107 dBA to scale-out (greater than 130 dBA) was obtained in each of the firecrackers. Once noise level exceeds 130 dBA, permanent hearing loss is thus unavoidable, as presented in 2 clinical patients. Besides hearing loss, firecrackers can also cause burn, eye injury, and respiratory problem. It is therefore recommended that firecrackers should be prohibited from squibbing.
