The major purposes of the research were to develop a solution-focused group-counseling program and to examine the immediate and follow-up effects of solution-focused group counseling on vocational high school students of shyness. Sixteen shy students in 1st and 2nd grades were randomly assigned into experiment group and control group. The students in the experiment group were arranged to attend eight sessions of solution-focused group counseling for eight weeks. The control group received no treatment. The dependent variables consisted of ”shyness,” ”interpersonal relationships,” ”self-consciousness,” ”social self-esteem.” All subjects received the pretest, the posttest, and the follow-up test with the Shyness Scale, Interpersonal Relationships Scale, Self-Consciousness Scale, and Social Self-Esteem Scale. The data were analyzed by analysis of covariance (ANCONA) for quantitative analysis. The result of the feedback sheets, the degree of satisfaction scale and interviews were used as the proof and supplements of the research results. The following conclusions were drawn from this study: 1 The results showed that solution-focused group had an immediate effect on the behavior, cognition, physiology, and affection of shyness. However, it didn't show significantly an immediate effect on the other dependent variables. 2 A four-week follow-up analysis was also conducted. The results showed that it held follow-up effect on the behavior, the physiology, and affection of shyness, and interpersonal courage; No significant effect was found on other dependent variables. 3 From the feedback and interviews of the experiment group, it was found that the students had positive attitudes for group, and knew how to handle the situation of shyness in the future better. Additionally, through practicum during the counseling sessions, the members of the experiment group were able to challenge the new goals in their daily lives, and to overcome their shyness courageously. They also noticed that a small change is more valuable. Finally, suggestions from the results of this study were provided for school counselors. Some topics for future research were also indicated.
