This study deals with fluid-structure interaction of cylindrical structures using the finite element method. ANSYS Workbench is utilized to compute the natural frequencies and mode shapes of liquid contained within cylindrical structures. The simulation results are compared with those in the literature. In the previously reported articles, FLUID80 was used to model the fluid with SHELL63 being used to model the cylindrical container. The analysis may result in serious errors for thick containers. A 3D solid element, SOLID186, is used in this work to model the container with FLUID220 being used to model the contained fluid. The analysis results for thin structures are in good agreement with those reported in the literature. Further analysis is performed for thick containers to avoid the significant errors when the thin shell element is used.
