The academic research on the history of modern frontiers, especially Tibet, has yielded many results. However, Mr. Lin's book takes Tibet as an example. From the perspective of state-building, it explores the process of disintegration and construction of the political order in China's border areas since the end of Qing Dynasty. In this book, the overseas history is rich, the perspective is unique, the research methods are novel, and the viewpoints are distinct, too. However, the author still lacks sufficient understanding of the Tibetan area on the ground of that there exists a little subjectivity due to some points are contrary to the truth of history for the single data cited in the book-paying more attention to the discourse of Western scholars,. However, the book has its own unique insights into the study of modern Tibetan history today, which deserves attention.
