Vindication of the Rights of Man當時受到廣泛的重視及討論。

The Romantic Period was a time of great social and political change. There was the French Revolution and the philosophies of freedom and liberty for all as well as the rise of democracy. These philosophies led to the American War of Independence. In England the Establishment saw the rise of liberal ideas and the rise of Napoleon as a threat to National interests as well as a threat to the Civil Establishment. Censorship laws were passed to control the Press. A number of free-thinking writers were muzzled under these laws although in most cases the charges against them were either dropped or they were acquitted. Mary Wollenstonecraft wrote her Vindication of the Rights of Man, a work that was widely debated. This was followed by her Vindication of the Rights of Women, a work that is little more than a well-reasoned plea for reasonable rights for women. However, it was a work that led to her being roundly condemned and publicly ridiculed. Other authors such as William Blake, John Keats and William Wordsworth also wrote about their expectations and disappointments over the events of the French Revolution, the horrors that the Revolution precipitated and their disappointment at Napoleon, one whom many initially regarded as a hero when he crowned himself Emperor.
