The Chinese Mazu Temple organization belongs to the "religious organization" research category of Chinese folk religion. In the past literature, the researchers emphasized the concept of the deity worship associations(神明會), the religious sphere (祭祀圈), and neglected that the temple itself has become an "autonomous" and strong religious organization under the influence of the national religious policy. This article takes Taichung Lecheng Temple (Hanxi Mazu Temple) as a case study to try to answer three questions: First, how autonomous is Lecheng Temple regarding its organization and connotation? Second, how did Lecheng Temple change through time and what are the structural factors to influence its historical changes? Third, how does Lecheng Temple organization operate? These three research questions constitute the main axis of this study. This study will try to find answers based on the historical development of Lecheng Temple and the event of Hanxi Mazu pilgrimage (媽祖繞境) in 2013.
