The Process and Development of Elementary Education Martial Arts in Yunlin County-The Case Study of an Exceptionally Evaluated Elementary School

In Taiwan, Yunlin County is known as the Home of Martial Arts, yet the growth of urbanization, industrialization, and outward migration have become major threats to the population as well as overall aptitude towards physical athleticism. Children are also less interested in traditional martial arts. In light of these concerns, the Yunlin County government launched the "Yunlin County Primary and Middle School Martial Arts Development Program" in 2000 in the hopes to improve physical fitness as well as to restore the county's former glory. This study first discusses the development and difficulties of promoting Martial Arts in Yunlin County. It then provides suggestions in addressing these difficulties. Through an in-depth analysis of case studies, which are analyzed trough references, semi-structured interviews, and the "Development of Martial Arts as an exercise" scale, the study investigates the process of the Martial Arts development program. The conclusions are: 1. Government support imposes essential influence on the development of martial arts in elementary schools. 2. Administrative assistance and the utilization of resources are important throughout the conceptualization, promotion, as well as the mature stages of development. 3. From the case studies, key factors to the success of martial arts development include: (1) Support from school administration through student reward incentives. (2) Recognition from faculty in promoting martial arts as the school's feature. (3) Formal employment of a professional martial arts instructor combined with the assistance of a leader teacher. (4) Willingness to input school resources. (5) Student experiencing substantial benefits from learning martial arts. (6) Intention and sense of honor among parents in allowing their children to participate in martial arts competitions.
