The Effect of Touch-based Interaction on Editing Performance and User Experience for Older Adults

Touch devices have become a mainstream control mode in human-computer interaction particularly for older adults who are disadvantaged at computer-based activities. While touch control provides a seemingly intuitive way for interaction, how older users can actually benefit from such devices may bear implications more than just meet the eyes. The present study thus aims to investigate the usability and user experience of touch control for the older adult in editing that represent a typical computer activity. Fifteen subjects aged over 65 participated in a 3x3 factorial experiment where touch control and editing task were both designed as a within-subject factor. Touch control consisted of three treatment levels, namely, touch screen, touch pad, and mouse (as an experimental control). Editing task comprised copy editing for whole-area, designated-area and rotated-area. Usability performance was measured by task completion time and number of error occurred. User experience was assessed in terms of intuitiveness, pleasure, confidence, fatigue and entertainability by a 1-10 rating scale with 10 reflecting the most favorable. The results indicated that the touchscreen condition outperformed the touchpad for both measures with the mouse varying between the two counterparts depending on the type of the editing tasks tested. The touchscreen condition was also favored over the other two devices with respect to the five subjective preferences. Implications for the design of touch-based interaction for the older adult was discussed and summarized.
