Root caries is a common oral disease in the older adults. The elderly are at particular risk of root caries due to gingival recession, periodontal disease, and xerostomia. Preventive measures for root caries should include oral hygiene, administration of fluoride, dietary counseling, early diagnosis and treatment, as well as recall visits. Root caries can be difficult to control and treat, because new caries develops rapidly at the margins of the restorations. The longevity of operative management for root caries depend on materials used and cavity preparation methods. This review will describe the factors affect the failure rate in root caries restoration. The advantage and disadvantage of filling material will be also described.
