Swing-Lock Removable Partial Denture as a Solution for Limited Stress Bearing Area on the Mandible - A Case Report

This 54-year-old female patient was under a series of dental treatment for a long time, due to the Traumatic Ulcerative Granuloma with Stromal Eosinophilia (TUGSE) over lower left posterior area of the mandible, which resulted in difficulty for definite removable prosthesis fabrication. Because the severe resorption of mandibular posterior edentulous ridge and insufficient stress bearing area to support and stabilize the prosthesis, the clinical use of the interim prosthesis was not acceptable. Base on these clinical findings, and the indications such as remaining anterior teeth, flaring-out tooth position, periodontally compromised teeth, the swing-lock removable partial denture (SLRPD) was used to reconstruct lower missing teeth area to improve the stability and the retention of removable dental prosthesis. Because the SLRPD distributed the occlusal load to all the remaining anterior teeth and stabilized the removable denture evenly, the irritation from the removable denture to the oral mucosa could be reduced. After using the SLRPD, the problem of recurrent ulceration was improved, and the chewing function was also rehabilitated successfully. During the 4 years follow-up period, no special discomfort was noted during denture use.
