The Journey of Psyche Transformation: An Inquiry into"Personal Mythology"through Art Making

The author of this master’s thesis is a graduate student in art therapy. Since childhood, he had had a feeling of being cocooned and had attempted in vain to break through this sense of isolation by artistic expression. However, the theme of mythology has brought about a sense of breakthrough and transformation. Therefore, this research attempts to explore the psyche of the author by virtue of artistic creation based on "personal mythology" in order to understand the context of the author’s inner imprisonment and hence transcend the given existential predicament. This research attempts to explore personal mythology through artistic creation and it involves two aspects which are the process of image creation and the exploration of the significance of mythology. This thesis adopts "art-based research" and "archetypal approach" as its methodologies because, in order to reach an in-depth understanding of these two aspects, it is necessary to employ a flexible combination of different methodologies. According to the spirit of art-based research, the researcher creates images of personal mythology through spontaneous creation, uses these images as the subject of study and deepens the understanding of these images by associating texts with them. In relation to the exploration of the significane of mythology, this thesis involves the concepts of "complex" and "archetype" that are related to psychic structures in mythology. This thesis adopts archetypal exploration to investigate the profound relationship between the images and personal experiences, a relationship that is created through active imagination. Step by step, the thesis aims to delve into the significance of psychic mythology in the researcher’s unconscious mind. This thesis discovers that, by using personal mythology as a metaphor for personal psyche, the repressed unconscious mind unfolds with the creation of mythology and the exploration of its history. Through reflections on picto-textual testimony, life experiences, creative process and archetypal exploration, the researcher continuously deepens his understanding of his personal mythology and he eventually attains a holistic and transcendent meaning. To conclude the whole process, the researcher discovers that the inquiry into personal mythology is similar to the life cycle of a butterfly. The imagined mythology of a person’s childhood can protect the fragile mind of the person. However, this mythology can serve as a cocoon that imprisons a person. As a person grows up, he must untangle the complexes and understand the archetypes in his personal mythology in order to transcend the myths and limitations. As a result, a person can eventually undergo psychic transformation and metaphorically become a free-flying butterfly.
