A Study on Predicting Pitcher's Ability to Throw at a Target from His Baseball Ability Emotional Stability and Accuracy of Pitching Motion

摘要

The purposes of the study were to (1) research the correlations between pitcher's ability to throw at a target and his baseball ability, emotional stability and accuracy of pitching motion; (2) Select the representative tests of pitcher's ability to throw at a target in the predictors mentioned above.
Sixty-three male university students served as the subjects in this investigation.
The datas obtained from testing or measuring were analyzed by correlational analysis to know the correlativities in the variables. Furthermore, the stepwise multiple regression was applied to select the representative tests of pitcher's ability to throw at a target:
The author obtained the following results:
1. The confirmed hypotheses are as follows
(1) Ability to throw for distance is significantly related to ability to throw at a target.
(r=0.5213, P＜0.001)
(2) Accuracy of pitching motion is significantly related to ability to throw at a target.
(r=0.5227, P＜0.001)
2. There is a partial correlation between ability to throw for distance and ability to throw at a target. (r(subscript c1.5))=0.3048, P＜0.01) There is also a partial correlation between accuracy of pitching motion and ability to throw at a targer
(r(subscript c5.1)=0.3079, p＜0.01)
3. According to the stepwise multiple regression only two items were selected. They are as follows in order:
(1) accuracy of pitching motion
(2) ability to throw for distance
If we use the two selected tests, a multiple regression equation computed for the criterion in the standard score units as follows:
Z(Subscript c)=0.32822 Z5=0.32461 Z1
The equation may also be computed in the raw score units
X(subscript c)=0.98731 X5+ 0.47138 X1+1.25871
And the S(Subscript c.51) =0.58378 (R^2=0.34080), (average =0.57444)
