This paper introduces microfabricated capillary electrophoresis (CE) chips and their application to DNA analysis. Fundamental theories of molecular biology and capillary electrophoresis are described as well as a detailed presentation of current research in the area of CE chips. Capillary electrophoresis chips are used to inject reagents, separate samples, isolate fractions, and sequence DNA. Examples of functional design, operation, and detection on capillary electrophoresis chips are presented.
