摘要

范曄（398-445）認為形式（文）必須為內容（意）服務，以意馭文，並在行文中貫徹這一宗旨。形式上力求整齊優美，捶句為雙，使奇偶相配，卻絕不使其妨礙內容的表達。觀看范曄序、論、贊韻散相間，形式整齊而靈活。序、論基本上是駢文形式，但絕不拘泥，而是隨意所往，行乎其所當行，止乎其所當止；贊雖然全是四言一句，但句數多少不定，亦是極力把握形式與內容的統一，文辭雅潔，文氣疏朗，文筆優美，許多篇章堪稱優美的文學作品。在中國歷史上，中國的文士大多兼綜史學和文學，這一點在中國士大夫身上尤為明顯。可以說，融史學於文學，融文學於史學，構成了中國史學與中國文學相融的獨特風貌，而范曄《後漢書》雖為非標榜文學性的史傳文本，但由於其自身所含蘊的文學因子，再增上中國文士特別是士大夫兼綜史學與文學的精神加持，《後漢書》在後世中國文士的千年讀解中，便不斷地化入中國文士的精神內骨，對中國文學產生了直接或間接的影響。
