The study was designed to compare the immediate effects of the proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) hold-relax technique and passive range of motion on hamstring muscle group. A EDI-320 equipment was used to measure the angle of passive straight leg raising (SLR). The result demonstrated that the range of straight leg raising significantly increased only after appling hold-relax technique. The mechanisms of hold-relax were autogenic inhibition and Renshaw interneuron inhibitory function, clinic use of this technique in frozen shoulder and knee contracture has good results. Althrough there were a lot of methods to reduce muscle contracture, selection of technique will still depend on the nature of the problem and the ability of the patient to cooperate.
