Background: The therapeutic effectiveness of 311 nm narrow-band UVB over the traditional broad-band UVB in the treatment of psoriasis has been established. However, the minimal erythema dose (MED) to UVB within this particular spectrum in Taiwanese is not yet known. Objective: Our purpose was to investigate the MED of 311 nm narrow-band UVB in Taiwanese. Methods: Irradiation with 311 nm narrow-band UVB was performed over the lower back in 13 patients with psoriasis and 9 healthy volunteers. The results of the test were recorded 24 hours later. Results: The mean MED of the 22 people tested was 302.27 mJ/cm2. The results showed no significant sex difference and there was no significant difference between patients with psoriasis and healthy volunteers. The mean MED of subjects with Fitzpatrick skin type III and skin type IV were 275 mJ/cm2 and 312.5 mJ/cm2 respectively. The difference between these two groups was statistical- ly significant (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The mean MED to 311 nm narrow-band UVB in Taiwanese is around 300 mj/cm2, and this can be used to decide the initial dose and treatment regimen of phototherapy.
