Growing Degree Day Applied in Forage Management of Nilegrass

Nilegrass (Acroceras macrum Stapf) is a new forage species grown in Taiwan. Objectives of this study were to determine the base temperature required for plant growth of nilegrass and to apply growing degree day (GDD) in forage management of nilegrass. The base temperature estimated for plant growth of nilegrass was 8.4℃. The dry matter yield of nilegrass could be estimated accurately by the linear regression equation made from GDD. The result was similar to that estimated by the linear regression equation made from GDD, precipitation, and solar radiation. The average GDDs of nilegrass for cutting at 4, 6, 8 and 10 weeks were 474.9, 707.6, 907.8 and 1,187.3℃, respectively. The dry matter yield of nilegrass could also be estimated accurately by the linear regression equation made from GDD and by N application rates, regardless of precipitation, solar radiation and location. Results suggest that GDD could be used to estimate the dry matter yield of nilegrass and be applied in forage management of this species.
