Energy Consumption in Wheelchair Athletes with Spinal Cord Injury

Wheelchair sports are not only competitive, but also contribute to effective rehabilitation and medical treatment. In order to discover the related characteristics of wheelchair sports, this article reviews related research studies on energy consumption of the population with spinal cord injury (SCI) during wheelchair exercise. The results show that the level of the SCI influenced patients' motor functions and may also cause autonomic dysreflexia. Several factors may affect the energy consumption of wheelchair sports, and different measurement methods may obtain different testing results. In addition, when comparing the performance of different individuals, we need to consider the movement characteristics and requirements of each distinct sport, as well as the specific context of the measurement. By reviewing the energy consumption of wheelchair athletes with SCI, we will learn more about the factors that affect the energy consumption of wheelchair movement. In addition to providing wheelchair athletes with a reference to increase efficiency during a training program, this research offers other wheelchair users information on physical fitness and exercise rehabilitation.
