Pender is the only person from the nursing discipline to have proposed a Health Promotion Model to explain health promotion behavior. The theoretical sources regulate expectancy value theory and social learning theory, to establish Pender's Health Promotion Model conceptual framework. Since the declaration of the goal of ”health for all” by the World Health Organization in 1978, health promotion has been considered an important nursing function. The major purpose of this article is to describe the Health Promotion Model's major concepts, hypotheses, methodologies and issues concerning the clinic, education and research.
