Objectives: The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship between sleep quality and the autonomic nervous system using shift-work nurses as the study group. Methods: The subjective and objective analysis for 30 shift-work nurses were achieved using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and a self-home sleep test instrument, which was followed by heart rate variability (HRV) analysis of the autonomic nervous system. Results: Approximately 73.4% and 60.0% of the nurses showed poor sleeping quality via the subjective and objective analyses, respectively; moreover, an increase in nLF and LF/HF ratio and a decreased in TP of HRV was also found among the shift-work nurses, but this difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion: The subjective and objective analyses of general-shift nurses found that their sleeping quality was poor and that this had affected their autonomic nervous system. This was especially true among the night shift-work nurses. These research results are important to medical institutions and suggest there is a need to focus attention in the area of shift-work nurse sleep quality.
