This study employed a quasi-experimental design to study how ”auricular-acupuncture” affects quality of sleep. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) (Chinese version) was employed as the study's primary research tool, which was administered to emergency room and intensive care unit nurses working at a local teaching hospital. Respondents who returned a score of 5 or higher on the PSQI were included in the sample population. The sample population of 55 nurses was then segregated into a subgroup of 27, who received auricular-acupuncture implants at the four critical pressure points on the ear (i.e., shenmen, xin, pizhixia and shen), and a subgroup of 28 the control), on whom no treatment regime was implemented. The treatment subgroup was taught how to press the critical points on the ear and fitted with auricular seeds inserted into three points on the right ear. Auricular seeds were kept in place for exactly one week, at which time the procedure was repeated for the same three points on the left ear. The treatment cycle was repeated to give a total treatment time of four weeks. An important finding of this study was the reduction in the sleeping quality score from 9.52 to 5.81 for the group that received the implants. Their reduction was significantly greater than that achieved by the control group (which fell from 8.71 to 8.0). Results support the argument that auricular-acupuncture can play a positive role in the improvement of sleep quality.
