Singing and listening to songs is a popular leisure activity in Japan. Many previous studies show that songs can be a good learning material to arouse the students’ learning interest and ensure that students can learn the language effectively. However, in Japan, Songs Teaching lessons are normally taught for entertainment, the lessons failed to recognize the language learning functions of the songs, therefore using songs as language learning material is not widely practiced. Moreover, there is very few studies relate to using songs as teaching or learning Chinese materials in Japan. This could be due to the fact that Chinese teaching in Japan does not think highly of including songs as teaching material. As a result, the market is lack of suitable using Chinese songs for teaching or learning material.

First of all, this thesis will discuss the influences of music to people physiologically and psychologically. We will discuss about how the students can learn a variety of language skills through using songs as learning material. Thereafter, using of theories to discuss and explain the current situation of learning Chinese in Japan. The current use of songs in teaching material will be analyzed and a questionnaire research will be conducted to understand Japanese students’ needs. Lastly, one unit of using Chinese songs as teaching material will be designed for Japanese students based on the results of the research and the theories that are discussed in this study.

Through the conduction of Literature Review, Material Analyze, Needs Analysis and the design of learning material, this study came to a few conclusions. Firstly, Chinese songs are good learning material for Japanese students. Music has positive effect for human physiological and psychologically, music will create a low anxiety atmosphere and can sharpen language skills. Secondly, the Students’ Needs Analysis via Questionnaire Research shows that most Japanese students are interested in using Chinese songs as learning material. They would like to use Chinese songs to hone their language skills. But existing material paid great attention to the introduction of culture and the songs selected are outdated. Hence, existing material failed to gain the students’ interest. When designing Chinese song as learning material, up-to-date popular songs must be selected, different types of language exercises and activities must be included. Lastly, the selection of songs must also be based on the applicability on language teaching, difficulty of the song lyrics, the rhythm, singer pronunciation etc. In addition, as Chinese language has 5 tones, the material must set reading practices to train Japanese students’ sensitivity in the pronunciation of the 5 tones.
