The Formosan sika deer (Cervus nippon taiouanus) restoration project, which started in 1984, has successfully established a wild and growing sika deer population in the Kenting National Park. When the number of wild deer was still small in 2003, we analyzed the nitrogen content of feces to assess the nitrogen intake consumed by the wild deer at that time. The results of the study showed that the nitrogen intake of wild deer was maintained at an ideal and stable state throughout the year. Nowadays, the number and density of wild deer have greatly increased, and high populations often reduce the nitrogen intake of animals. Therefore, it is necessary to reassess the nutrition status of sika deer population in Kenting. In this study, from March 2020 to February 2021, the excretion of sika deer was collected in the Shirding Uplifted Coral Reef Nature Reserve and Shuiwaku Prairie for nitrogen content analysis. The results showed that the average annual nitrogen content of sika deer herd in the two sample areas was 1.78%, which was significantly lower than the 2.00% of the wild deer in 2003, indicating that although the nutrition status can still maintain the basic needs of deer and it has been reduced. Continuous evaluation of nitrogen intake will be an important basis for the formulation of long-term population rehabilitation and management strategies for Formosan sika deer.
