Literary Experience and Body Politics: Directions in the Studies of Women's Literature of the Qing

This essay focuses on women's literature from seventeenth-century to early twentieth-century China, surveying and analyzing research directions of the past decade and new approaches that will possibly rise in the future. I point out that the concept of ”rewriting literary history” serves as the background for nearly all scholarly work on women's literature, while the relationship between women's writing and the idea of ”canonicity” is significant. Starting from this understanding, I survey the collections and compilations of women's writing from the Qing period, and discuss several modern histories of women's literature. I further introduce some reflections on the idea of canonicity in recent studies. Next, I raise major topics in the studies of women's literature, including literary activity, literary controversy, studies of individual authors, studies of particular genres, etc. I also propose that we pay more attention to literary women and their activities at the turn of the twentieth century. In the last section 1 list some new approaches that may arise. These include women's literature and religion, women's literature and area culture, women and publishing, and women and literary/artistic activities other than writing. To conclude, I emphasize the importance of returning to the text and its aesthetic value in the studies of women's literature.
