The survey reveals that root rot of anthurium caused by fungi is very widespread in the main anthurium production center in Hawaii. All the 11 cultivars surveyed displayed root rot associated with Calone ctria crotalariac, Pythium splendens, P. spinosum, P. vexans or binucleate Rhizoctonia. These fungi were pathogenic to roots of all or some cultivars of anthurium tested. Treatment with the herbicide diuron greatly increased disease incidence caused by binucleate Rhizoctonia Results suggested that the common usage of herbicides in the cultivation of anthurium may have contributed to the widespread occurrence of anthurium root rot in Hawaii.
