The early growth of 3 tree species, Pittosporum pentandrum, Ficus microcarpa, and Nerium indicum, planted at windward and leeward sites of the Kuanyin Industrial Park in Taoyuan County was investigated. Both diameter at ground and tree height of all 3 species at the leeward site were greater than corresponding values at the windward site. Biomass accumulation per tree at the leeward site was also larger than that at the windward site, because of injury by the northeastern monsoon. Even the biomass accumulation and leaf area per tree at the leeward site were less than those values for casuarina at the site affected by the northeastern monsoon. This clearly indicates that the northeastern monsoon damages planted trees in this coastal area.
