Using wood as the construction material and ambient water from the Pabaw irrigation canal as experimental water under gravity flow, three experimental fish ways were established along the shore of the Daika River in Taichung. They were designed so that types, slopes and baffle heights of the fishways, as well as flow rates of the experimental water were easily changeable. In the experiment, two types of fishway baffles with three slopes were tested, using two native species of fishes in Taiwan, Acrossocheilus formosanus and Varicorhinus barbatuJus, as experimental fishes. This paper describes the designs of the fishways and the results obtained in the preliminary experiment.
