The purpose of this study was to determine the dental health status of 0~6-year-old children in the remote areas of Taiwan. In total, 515 children aged 0~6 years old participated in this study; they were sampled by a stratified multi-stage cluster sampling design. The results of this study showed that the deft (decay, extraction, filling and teeth) index, filling rate, and caries ratio of primary teeth of 0~6-year-old children in this remote area were 6.27, 13.64%, and 79.03%, respectively. It appears that a high caries ratio and low filling rate still exist in the remote areas, and there were no apparent statistical differences in the caries status of 0~6-year-old children in the remote areas among different socioeconomic states and oral health knowledge levels of the parents. We should be concerned with this special circumstance in remote areas caused by a shortage of medical resources and difficulties in popularizing and deepening oral health education. The parents' oral health knowledge was found to be very limited in the remote areas. Thus, it is very important to broaden and popularize oral health education. We suggest setting up an institution of oral hygienists to raise the level of oral health knowledge in remote areas of Taiwan.
