Design review is a technique for evaluating a proposed design to assure that the design (1) will perform successfully during use, (2) can be manufactured at low cost, and (3) is suitable for prompt low cost field maintenance. For new product development, the design review are conducted by a team consisting mainly of specialists who are not directly associated with the development of the design. These specialists must be highly experienced and bring with them the reputation of being objective.
The design review meetings are built around prepared agendas and documentation sent out in advance. Minutes of meetings are prepared and circulated. Follow-up for action are likewise formalized. Design review cover all quality-related parameters and others as well. The parameters can include reliability, maintainability, configuration, cost, etc. The design review is a formal peer review of the development results. Degree of competence of the participants should be commensurate with the technology and process under development. A review must be objective and detailed to be of value.
