摘要

1915年赫濟時以威斯康辛大學醫預科行將畢業而醉心於生理學的大學生，前往上海敦授生理學一年，1916年在歐戰困頓的年代回美國聖路易華盛頓大學攻讀醫學博士學位。因為經濟桔倨，要靠在X光、外科、生理學等實驗室當助理的收入，才能完成學業。因為結識洛克斐勒基金會和北平協和醫學院計畫主持人的關係，畢業後專攻放射線學，接受軍醫和陸軍放射線學校的訓練，也在軍醫院放射線科歷練。1919年退役後便前往北平協和醫學院，創辦放射線科和放射線學校業務。1923年借學術休假的機會遊學德國，並回威斯康辛大學完成生理學哲學博士學位，更順利地展開他以後在北平、芝加哥和台灣放射線學的發展工作。

In 1915, Paul C. Hodges interrupted his premedical and physiology study in the University of Wisconsin a few months before graduation and went to Shanghai to teach physiology in the Harvard Medical School of China for one year. In 1918, during the humble years of the First World War, Paul finally finished his M.D. study in the Washington University at Saint Louis with self-supported as laboratory assistant of X-rays, surgery and physiology. With the acquaintance of the members of Rockfeller Foundation and the Peking Union Medical College project such as Roger Green, Franklin McLean etc., Dr. Hodges selected radiology as his postgraduate training, this was arranged in the army radiology school and practiced in the army hospital caring the wounded from the First World War. In 1919, when the war was over, Dr. Hodges went back to China and developed the Department of Radiology and X-ray School of Peking Union Medical College. In 1923, Dr. Hodges had a sabbatical leave, he studied physics of radiology in Germany and then finished his Ph. D. study in physiology in the University of Wisconsin. All these professional trainings enabled him to work even more successfully in the subsequent years in Peking, Chicago and Taiwan for the further development of radiology.
