類推式字母拼讀法對國小學童英語解碼能力影響之研究

The Effects of an Analogy-Based Phonics Approach on Elementary School Students' Decoding Ability

摘要


本研究在探究類推式字母拼讀法對國小六年級學童英語解碼能力之影響及其對學習此方法的反應。研究採「不等組前後測」進行十週教學實驗,兩組使用相同教材。實驗組由研究者授課,控制組由該班英語教師授課。研究結果如下: 一、實驗組在「五十字讀字能力檢測」之解碼正確度表現顯著優於控制組。 二、實驗組在「三分鐘讀字能力檢測」之解碼速度表現與控制組無顯著差異。 三、類推式字母拼讀法普遍受到實驗組學童的歡迎,原因如下: 1.類推式字母拼讀法提供單字牆與提示字,做為字音類推時的輔助依據,學童覺得自己的讀字情形得到改善; 2.學童普遍對於不需依賴他人,能自己解決問題感到自信。

The purpose of the study aimed to explore the effects of Analogy-based Phonics Approach on English decoding competence of the 6th grade students and the students' attitude towards this approach. The method adopted in this research was a ”quasi-experiment design” with two nonequivalent groups selected from elementary school English language learners. Two 6th grade classes were randomly assigned to the experimental group and the control group. The experimental group received Analogy-based Phonics Approach, conducted by the researchers, for 10 weeks, while the control group received regular phonics instruction, conducted by the original teacher for the same period of time. The instructional content was adopted from the phonics section of the assigned textbook. The research instruments included 3-minute Reading Test, 50 Words Reading Test, and Questionnaire of Attitude to Analogy-based Phonics Approach. The results of this experiment are as follows: 1. Students from the experimental group score significantly higher than those in the control group in reading accuracy. 2. Scores of experimental group and control group show no significance in reading speed. 3. Analogy-based phonics approach is welcome by the students from the experimental group greatly. With word wall and clue words offered as an easy-to-get learning resource, it makes decoding a lot easier by analogizing the sound of the same onset or rime. Students notice their performance in English reading has improved and started to gain more confidence in themselves. Moreover, students are proud of themselves now because they know what to do when they encounter some words they don't know. Therefore, they tended to be eager to read the short stories and even to learn English. Based on the findings of this study, some suggestions for analogy-based phonics teaching are described.
