Physical therapy to date has not been a popular career choice for the visually impaired in Taiwan. Approximately 2500 visually-impaired people who were aged between 15 and 29 years were registered in 1996 in Taiwan. Many of these students graduated from a special school for the visually impaired and became masseuses. This article reports on the physical therapy education for visually-impaired students in the United Kingdom(UK).In the UK, the visually impaired students began their career as masseuses after graduating from special schools. The massage-training program in the UK gradually expanded in curriculum content and became the North London School of Physiotherapy in 1978. Since 1993, however, all visually impaired students have entered mainstream physical therapy schools for their education towards attaining physical therapists status. The advantages and disadvantages of special education versus inclusive education for the visually-impaired person choosing physical therapy as their career discussed. It is recommended that mainstream physical therapy schools in Taiwan eliminate the current restriction on enrollment of the visually impaired, thus making physical therapy a possible career choice for visually impaired people.
