The accreditation process for various long term care facilities in Taiwan is currently defined by the governmental authority by which they are controlled and regulated. General long term and disabled care facilities fall under the Bureau of Social Welfare; Veteran homes are regulated by the Veteran Affairs Commission, while nursing homes and nursing homes for the mentally ill are overseen by the Department of Health. This article presents a summary of the difficulties and differences in the present accreditation processes across the various facilities, outlines the developmental steps of long term care facility accreditation surveys in Taiwan, and presents a standardized Accreditation Decision Model developed by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations as a possible solution.
