The Taiwan Health Administration set upon a reform of its hospital accreditation program in 2002, after 23 years implementation of the program. A revision of the accreditation standards of the so called ”medical center hospitals”, the top of the three-level hospitals, was taken place in the reform. Regretedly, neither the prevailing nor the revised standards has a formal statemant of the mission of the hospitals per se. This paper discussed what the missions would be, as well as probed on the nature and practice of the accreditation on hospital overall management.
